He was born and brought up in Oak Park, Illinois. Soon after finishing high school, he started off as a journalist, but then he went off to participate in World War I as an ambulance driver for the Italian side. He was forced to return home within a year thanks to a serious injury that he suffered. He got married to Hadley Richardson and settled in Paris where he found himself an occupation of a foreign correspondent. During this tenure abroad he came across “Lost Generations “which was basically a bunch of writers and artists. His first book The Sun Also Rises was written during this period.

Hemingway broke up with his wife and then got remarried this time to Pauline Pfeiffer and returned to States and set up home in Key West Florida. In Late 1930’s the Spanish civil war broke out and Hemingway travelled to Spain to take up the vocation of a war correspondent. Once the war was over he returned and his second marriage also broke up and he then got married to Martha Gelhorn.

His next book “For whom the Bell Tolls “saw the light of the day and then he migrated to Cuba. His calling as a war correspondent came again as the Second World War broke out and he witnessed Operation warlord and the liberation of Paris first hand. His marriage broke up once again and he took in his fourth wife Marsh Welsh Hemingway. He wrote his next novel “ Across the River and Into the Trees “ followed by his masterpiece “ The Old Man and the Sea “ which hit the markets in 1952. He returned to Idaho from Cuba and almost a decade later he ended his life in 1961.

The three decades starting from the 1920’s was the most productive period for him in terms of his writing but the novel that earned him worldwide fame and recognition was “The Old Man and the Sea”.
