David Lynch was born on January 20, 1946. David Lynch is a very different kind of film maker. His movies are always of a slightly different flavor and bear his signature imprint and his characteristic style is even termed as “Lynchian”. His movies are known for their sound design which is done with precision and detail and often have a surreal nightmarish feel. He often portrays the darker side of rural America. This can be seen in movies such as Twin Peaks and Blue Velvet. Although not always box office hits, his movies have a dedicated following ever since his debut film “Eraserhead which was filmed back in 1977.

Lynch has got three Best Director Oscar nominations for his films Mulholland Drive, Blue Velvet and The Elephant Man. Elephant Man also won a nomination for the best screenplay Academy Award. He has won France's César Award two times for Best Foreign Film. Other awards include the lifetime achievement Golden Lion award which he won at the Venice Film Festival and the Palme d'Or which was won at the Cannes Film Festival. He has also won honors from the French government which gave him the Officier in 2007 and the Chevalier in 2002, both variations of the top civilian honor in France - the Legion of Honor. In 2007 he was described as "the most important director of this era" by the Guardian.
