Lawrence Welk was born in Strasburg, North Dakota in a predominantly German neighborhood. His parents were Ludwig and Christiana Welk who were ethnic Germans who emigrated from Odessa, Ukraine, to America in 1892. Ukraine at that time was part of the Great Russian Empire. He was born as sixth of eight children that the couple had.

The family lived on a homestead, which has become a hot tourist spot today. It is believed that they braved their first bitter North Dakota winter under a sod covered upturned wagon.

Lawrence Walk firmly believed that he wanted to become a musician and he got his dad to get him an accordion for 400$ through the post. To fund his accordion he offered to work in his dad’s farm till the age of 21. He also tried to fast track his repayment by doing some performances and giving to his father all the income he earned.

It is commonly believed that Welk had no knowledge of English till the age of 21. But that was not true as he started picking up English ever since he began going to school. The place where he lived in North Dakota was full of Germans emigrated from Russia and the ones who taught spoke English as their second language. There he learnt his unique accent which was a mix of Russian and German accent and to overcome this defect he even underwent classes to correct his pronunciation and was quite successful in getting rid of his accent. When his pedigree was ever enquired upon he would remark “Alsace-Lorraine, Germany” which was actually the place where his great grandfathers originally hailed from and drifted to Russia.
