Matthew Abram Groening popularly knows as Matt Groening was born on February 15, 1954. He is an American screenwriter, cartoonist and producer. He is the creator of two television series Futurama and The Simpsons both of which were very successful. He has also come up with Life in Hell, which is a comic strip. Groening sold his first professional cartoon of Life in Hell in 1978 to the Wet magazine. It still appears in more than 250 weekly newspapers. Jeames L Brooks noticed the Life in Hell cartoon strip and got in touch with Groening asking him to work in The Tracey Ullman Show for its animation section. Initially, Brooks wanted Groening to use the characters of Life in Hell in the show.

Groening was however weary of losing the ownership rights and therefore created The Simpsons, a cartoon family. He named the characters after his own family and Bart was made by shuffling the letters of the word brat. These were later made into an independent show named The Simpsons which became a huge hit spanning over 21 seasons. In 1997, Groening, joined hands with David X. Cohen the writer of Simpsons and created Futurama which was an animated series with the theme of life in the year 3000. The show debuted in the year 1999. In 2003, Fox stopped airing the show after four years. Comedy Central is planning on creating 16 episodes of the series for creating direct to DVD films.
